Ski Area Mutterer Alm
The Olympic Games in Innsbruck made Axamer Lizum famous. Rosi Mittermaier won three gold medals here. There is little glamorous Olympic flair here, though; instead, beginners and advanced skiers alike can enjoy total ski enjoyment. The snow-secure high valley over the Inn is well-loved by all. The village of Axams is situated in a sunny high valley south of the Inns and is, despite two Olympic Games, has remained a nice Tyrolean village. In the centre stand the lovely village church and the public house “Neuwirt”. The true gem of the region is the bordering Axamer Lizum ski area (1,583 – 2,343 m). “Lizum”, according to the locals, means “high lying pasture”. But what goes on here winter for winter has little to do with an introspective mountain pasture. A funicular, as well as many chair and drag lifts from the valley floor open up two challenging ski mountains, the Birgitzköpfl and the Hoadle, with the Pleisen in the background. But “only” sun-hungry and panorama enthusiasts will get their money’s worth here.
Slopes: Good skiers prefer the Olympic valley runs of the Hoadle, which are also suitable for intermediate board fans. Even beginners will make it into the valley on the former women’s valley run, as the steep and extremely challenging start slope are elegantly circumnavigated. More difficult are the mogul-sprinkled slopes on the Birgitzköpfl down to the valley station. A particular delight is the valley run from Pleisen to Axams, with adequate snow. With the connection to the planned ski park in Mutters, the area will expand by approx. 18 km of relatively steep slopes to cruise and enjoy.
Trails: Those who wish to explore the region on narrow cross-country skis will be right at home on the high plateau panorama trail around Axam. From there, one can ski to Natters and can connect to other cross-country trails. Start and destination points are both the cross-country centre in Axam.
Most winter sports fans also find many more ways to relax after a strenuous day on the slopes in the leisure centre. There is an indoor pool with a hot water outdoor pool and a large sauna area. Curlers and ice skaters can enjoy a very generous skating rink. The village Axams also offers everything the heart desires regarding après ski. Guests desiring city flair can easily reach the Tyrolean capital Innsbruck with its “Golden Roof”, only 9 km away. Don’t forget the great shopping, and comprehensive cultural and events calendar.
