The largest resort in the Ahrntal, St. Johann, offers something for both enthusiastic winter sports fans and culture buffs. The lovely resort received its name from Saint John, to whom the impressive parish church is dedicated. The church with mighty cupola was built in the 9th century and is one of the oldest buildings in the village. The church is known especially for the fresco of Saint Christopher, which is the oldest image of him in Tyrol. Also worth seeing are the mineral museum with approx. 750 exhibits and a museum shop, as well as the 2 km distant St. Johann monastery with Carolingian paintings, the largest early medieval painting series. The monastery was declared a UNESCO world heritage site. With its beautiful and intact setting, St. Johann guarantees a relaxing and rejuvenating holiday.
