How much snow falls in France?
In winter, France’s high mountains traditionally receive heavy snowfall. The 2025/26 season was no exception, with snowfall figures, at least in terms of peak values, exceeding those of the previous year. Leading the way were the ski resorts of Chamonix and Praz sur Arly (Espace Diamant), where a total of 15.64 m of snow fell between early October and late March. With 13.2 m, the Les 2 Alpes ski resort came second in this category, whilst the Alpe d’Huez ski resort ‘completed’ the podium here with a total of 13.05 m of snow.
Where does the most snow fall worldwide?
The world’s snowiest region is in the west of the main Japanese island of Honshu. Historically, the mountains of the Japanese Alps have seen an average of between 30 and 38 metres of fresh snowfall per year!
When did the French Alps see the most snow?
The snowiest year since weather records began in the French Alps was 1980. During this winter, the region on the border with Italy and Switzerland had snow on a total of 202 out of 365 days, and on 133 days the snow cover was even over 1 metre high.
