How much snow falls in Germany?
In Germany, too, the main snow-rich areas are largely located in the Alps. And indeed, the best slope conditions during the 2025/26 winter were found in the south of the country. With a total of 5.75 metres, the ski resort of Ski Oberstdorf Kleinwalsertal received the most fresh snow between the end of October and the end of March. The Tiroler Zugspitz Arena & Garmisch ski region also took second place in the rankings, where winter sports enthusiasts enjoyed 4.11 m of snow. Finally, the Winklmoosalm-Steinplatte ski resort took third place with 3.95 m of fresh snow.
Where does the most snow fall worldwide?
It may come as a surprise, but the world’s snowiest region is actually in Japan. More precisely, in the Japanese Alps. In the west of the main island of Honshu, an incredible 30 to 38 meters of new snow fall per year on a historical average!
When did the most snow fall in the German Alps?
For almost 80 years, the Zugspitzplatt has held the record for the deepest snow cover ever recorded. On 2 April 1944, snow piled up around Germany’s highest mountain (2,962 m) to a depth of 8.30 m – a figure that remains unmatched to this day. Balderschwang is considered the snowiest village in Germany. During the 1997/98 winter, the village in the Allgäu, situated at an altitude of 1,044 m, recorded a total of 12.30 m of fresh snow!
