09/18/2017 - Brandi Gulick

Up to 4,545 m high, surrounded by 18 peaks reaching over 4,000 m in altitude, with sunshine present 80% of the year, and snow security along 147 km of piste throughout the entire Saastal – Saas-Fee is a travel destination of superlatives! In addition to all that, this resort in the Swiss Saastal has even more to offer: with the “WinterCARD”, holiday-goers heading to Saas-Fee can profit from huge savings. Relaxation and winter sports just got even better here.

The view of the Mittelallalin is breathtaking.

Rustic villages and mountain worlds galore in the Saastal

The Saastal belongs to the German-speaking area of the Valais canton, the Upper Valais, and lies in the middle of the Swiss Alps surrounded by 18 4,000-m high peaks. Along with the most well-known resort, Saas-Fee, located at the foot of the “Dom” and its 4,545 m altitude, making it the highest mountain in Switzerland, the Saastal is composed of the districts of Saas-Grund, Saas-Almagell and Saas-Balen. At 1,800 m, Saas-Fee is the highest resort in the Saastal and is home to about 1,600 residents. The houses found here are designed in a chalet-style, although houses both new and old, some of which from the 17th and 18th centuries, all help to shape the area’s character. When heading out from the car-free resort of Saas-Fee, you’ll make your way straight into the dreamy, same-name ski area, which promises breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain landscapes from altitudes reaching up to 3,600. The unique panoramic view reaches all the way to the Bernese and Grison Alps. On particularly clear days, you can even see the lights from Italy’s fashion capital, Milan.

Authentic paradise in Saas-Fee.

Holiday paradise for the whole family

Those who are holidaying in Saas-Fee are not simply tourists: thanks to its numerous amenities for families, the resort is also known as the “Free Holiday Republic Saas-Fee” and therefore names holiday-goers “citizens”. Accordingly, guests here should feel right at home while at the same time experiencing the best possible relaxation available. In both summer and winter, a unique mountain and glacier world are just waiting to be explored by big and little travellers alike. The holiday region of Saas-Fee/Saastal doesn’t boast the “Families welcome” seal of excellence for nothing: Family packages, entertainment opportunities for children, petting zoos, legendary marmot feeding, a new play area with a 14 m long slide, the car-free resort of Saas-Fee, and a ski area for both beginners and experts really help shape the region into a popular holiday destination. The offer is accentuated by the “Feeblitz”, a 900 m long winter and summer toboggan run. With speeds reaching up to 40 km/h, sleds and their passengers fly down the piste. To top it all off, further highlights for winter sports fans of all ages include spelunking between Saas-Fee and Saas-Grund, a ride on the sled run, and snowshoe hiking.

In Saas-Fee, not even the kids come up short.

Plenty of fun on the pistes in the Saas-Fee ski area

Snow security from November through April plus a summer ski area on the glacier – in Saas-Fee, no snowy wishes are left unfulfilled. Reaching up to almost 3,600 m altitude, the Alpin Express cable cars move through the area along with the new Spielboden lift, from where winter sports fans can test themselves on around 120 km of piste and all levels of difficulty. For children, a special area at the edge of the village has been arranged. Little ones can make their first moves on the flat practice piste and baby lift. More action can be found at the Freestyle Park, of which is relocated to the glacier ski area during the summer. Here, another 20 km of piste are available to use by skiers and snowboarders alike.

Skiers can expect a wide selection of pistes in the Saastal.

A special highlight regarding transport: the world’s highest underground funicular, the “Metro Alpin”, lies at approx. 3,000 m altitude. Guests ride under the glacier and arrive at the about 3,500 m high Mittelallalin, where the highest rotating restaurant in the world is located. One level lower in the ice pavilion, guests will be let in on the secrets of the glacier world.

It’s no wonder that the Saas-Fee ski area is known worldwide: the spectacular Glacier Bike Downhill Race, as well as the Allalin Race, regularly take place here. The latter of the two is the longest downhill race in the world, with ski racers making their way from 3,573 m altitude down to 1,800 m in resort.

Cross-country fans in the Saastal will also be sure to find something along the 32 km of trails available to cosily ride or even skate along.

In the ice pavilion, guests will be let in on the secrets of the glacier world.
