Ski holidays Bleiburg – Relaxation and winter sports at the Petzen!

Bleiburg

Bleiburg is located in Southern Carinthia, only a couple of kilometres away from the Slovenian border at an altitude of 479 m. Since the town is close to Slovenia, cultural influences of both countries have been mixing for a long time, which is reflected in the traditions and culture of the Bleiburg people in a charming way. The town's landmark is Bleiburg Castle - a Renaissance building from the 17th century that gives the overall appearance of the locality a nice touch. The Werner Berg Museum at the Bleiburg main square displays a considerable art collection of the German painter and the alleys offer an exciting night life with various cafés, bars and taverns. Petzen (2,216 m) is the local mountain of Völkermarkt and therefore Bleiburg as well. The popular mountain, of which is worth a visit, is referred to as "The Top of Southern Carinthia" and features a ski area of about 15.5 km, as well as a sizeable snow park.

Jaun Valley

East of Klagenfurt, the expansive Jaun Valley (Slov. "Podjuna") stretches across the Southern Carinthia region. It covers the eastern part of the Klagenfurt basin and offers enticing travel destinations, such as Lake Turner, Lake Klopein and the ski area at the Petzen mountains. The Jaun Valley is close to the Slovenian border, which is why both country's cultural and linguistic characteristics are deeply rooted in this region - this makes for an exciting cultural mix. The landscape along the Drava river alternates between meadows, forests and low mountain ranges. In winter, the landscape changes into a white wonderland, which offers diverse opportunities for winter sport enthusiasts like alpine skiing, winter hiking and cross-country skiing. The two towns of Völkermarkt and Bleiburg are well connected via the Jaun Valley lift. The impressive Jaun Valley bridge is known even outside the region as a bungee jumping spot and spans over the Drava - with an altitude of 96 m, it is the highest railway bridge in Austria.
